Will the science of reading or the reading brain adapt in the AI world? To what extent have they already adapted? Are there specific implications for advanced & expert reading for students who have moved beyond the primary grades? Qs we continue to wrestle with in our Center.
There is a history of the adaptation of the reading brain. Have all adaptations of the reading brain stopped? If not, the science of reading is not settled. As educators and researchers, we must continue to interrogate and research to make advances.

We need a new Science of Reading focused on advanced reading, writing & knowledge development across the disciplines. This is evident when we examine our national practices & associated metrics. National newspapers have been publishing the same dismal reading stories for decades.
@tetheredtoed1 @christinakcover Say more! Science of reading also involves expanding neuronal activity and taking advantage of the brain’s plasticity to move kids to advanced levels or expert readings. Difficult to find studies that provide data, particularly for early adolescents and beyond.
Struggling and non-struggling readers and writers read a minimum of 800 words each 1-hour lesson.
The MSU Denver Literacy Research Center and Clinic is conducting an Early Adolescent Literacy Impact study that teaches 4th and 5th grade students how to read and write across multiple texts and disciplines in 1-hour lessons. We are studying a multidimensional reading model.

While AI cannot be duped to focus on average and mediocre outcomes, teachers are still the best option to move majority of our nation’s students to advanced literacy outcomes .
