This 47-minute lecture is one of the clearest and most unsettling explanations of where AI is actually heading. Hinton helped build the neural network foundations behind modern AI. Then he left Google so he could speak more openly about the risks. The part that stuck with me: • AI is gaining abilities even its creators didn’t directly program • it is already better than humans at many cognitive tasks • the debate is no longer whether it will surpass us • the real question is how prepared we are when it does Most people still use Claude like a simple chatbot. Here's exactly how it works & how it could change millions of lives: Lung cancer protects itself by developing silently (no symptoms or tumor, nothing to detect until it's often too late) This matters because by the time most lung cancer is found, it's already advanced. That's exactly why lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in Europe, with around 484,000 new cases every year. But researchers at the Francis Crick Institute and UCL have found a way to use the disease's own biology against it. They discovered a 14-protein blood signature that reflects the inflammation in the lung environment before cancer ever forms. In simple terms, the body starts changing years before a tumor appears – and those changes leave a measurable fingerprint in your blood. Think of it like a smoke detector that senses the heat building up long before the fire actually starts. What makes this different from everything else: → It predicts lung cancer more than 5 years out, in some cases up to 7.5 years → It works in never-smokers (validated in a Taiwanese cohort where 93% never smoked) → It was validated across 8 datasets spanning the UK, US, Iceland, China, and Taiwan & it directly addresses the reasons lung cancer prevention has always failed: - No way to identify at-risk people beyond smoking history - No marker to guide who should get preventive treatment - No proven way to intervene before a tumor forms This approach aims to address all three at once. When researchers re-analyzed a Novartis trial of an anti-inflammatory drug, people with a high signature who took it cut their lung cancer risk nearly in half – with a number needed to treat of just 55, comparable to statins for heart disease. (Still early research – mostly retrospective data, needs prospective trials before reaching the clinic, but the mechanism is powerful) Every medical breakthrough follows the same path: Impossible → Possible → Refined → Applied.
