If your product works, why does the room still feel empty? Because trust doesn’t start with explanations People don’t trust things because they were convinced They trust things because someone else already stood there This is the "EMPTY ROOM EFFECT" In behavioral science, this is called social proof under uncertainty When the room is empty and one person walks in confidently, others assume they know something The brain doesn’t ask Is this objectively correct? It asks Why are they here already? Trust doesn’t form when you explain everything It forms when someone else implicitly signals safety by being first This is why: • Restaurants look busier on purpose • Apple stores never look empty • SaaS tools show “Used by 10,000+ teams” • Startups announce advisors before customers • Funds list LPs instead of returns The presence is the message Psychology backs this hard Studies in social cognition show that when individuals lack full information, they default to observational trust If others have already chosen, the perceived risk drops dramatically This is not herd behavior It’s risk outsourcing “If they’re here and still standing, maybe I’ll be fine too.” The Empty Room problem appears when: • Your product has no visible users • Your brand has no obvious believers • Your narrative has no recognizable carriers You can be correct You can be early You can be better But an empty room feels dangerous So founders overcompensate They add: More explanations More features More proof points More words Which ironically increases doubt Because confidence doesn’t shout It occupies space quietly The most effective marketing rarely says: “Trust us” It shows: Someone else already did This is why: Testimonials outperform whitepapers Screenshots outperform claims Communities outperform funnels Faces outperform logos You don’t need mass adoption You need visible adoption Even a small group, clearly present, is enough One credible person in the room beats ten anonymous claims outside it That’s also why early distribution matters more than polish A founder with: 10 real users who show up publicly beats 1,000 silent signups Because silence feels like emptiness And emptiness feels risky The Empty Room effect explains why: People trust brands before understanding them Join movements before reading docs Follow founders before using products They’re not buying logic They’re buying safety Good marketing doesn’t fill the room with noise It puts the right people in the room and lets others notice Once the room no longer feels empty Trust compounds on its own That’s not manipulation That’s how humans decide under uncertainty And every founder ignores this at their own cost

The next natural step is to amplify your ideas, through hosting a show of your own where you platform the projects you’ve invested in. a great way to think about it, that was ingrained in me early on: everytime you take an unpopular stance, imagine a fast wind blowing and your soul is holding its ground refusing to be dragged with it. trust from others comes when we refuse to let the wind of validation blow us away.
